Sephora will open roughly 100 shop-in-shops inside Marks & Spencer stores across the UK, with the first sites and a dedicated M&S web offer going live in spring 2027. The LVMH-owned retailer confirmed the "strategic partnership" this week, calling it the next step in a UK growth strategy that began with its return to the British market and expanded this summer with curated boutique concepts in London.

The deal gives Sephora something its own estate cannot deliver quickly: national physical coverage through M&S's store network and omnichannel platform, including home delivery and click & collect from M&S stores nationwide. For M&S, it injects specialist prestige beauty credentials into a category the supermarket has struggled to differentiate.

What does the partnership actually involve?

The new format, branded "Sephora at M&S", will blend Sephora's brand relationships and discovery-led retail model with M&S's high-trust brand and logistics infrastructure. Key elements confirmed so far:

  • Launch into selected M&S stores across the UK from spring 2027
  • A target of around 100 physical sites built out over time
  • An online range on the M&S website, broader than the in-store assortment, with home delivery and click & collect
  • A "carefully curated" mix of beauty favourites, emerging brands and exclusives across skin care, make-up, fragrance, hair care and body care
  • Specialist beauty teams staffing the in-store spaces

The full product line-up, including new-to-M&S brand names and selected Sephora exclusives, will be confirmed closer to launch. That confirmation is the first hard data point brand partners and buyers should watch.

Why is Sephora accelerating now?

Catherine Spindler, President of Europe & Middle East at Sephora, said the retailer's UK launch had performed strongly enough to justify a faster, wider rollout. "Our UK launch has been such a huge success, that we wanted to go further and faster," she said.

She framed the M&S deal as a deliberate diversification of format rather than a replacement for existing channels: "By combining our global expertise in prestige beauty with M&S' established retail infrastructure, we are creating a more diversified and scalable model for growth, while continuing to evolve the way customers can access the Sephora experience."

Sephora's UK ecosystem now spans three complementary models: its digital and app proposition, large-format "Temples of Beauty", and the curated boutique concepts that debuted in London this summer. The M&S partnership adds a fourth, mid-scale format with far lower capital cost per site than standalone stores — the arithmetic behind the 100-site ambition.

What does it mean for M&S's beauty business?

John Lyttle, Managing Director of Fashion, Home & Beauty at M&S, positioned the deal at the centre of the retailer's beauty turnaround. "Beauty is an important category for M&S, with the potential to attract new customers to shop with us and give existing customers the opportunity to shop with us more often," he said.

"Our partnership with Sephora will sit at the heart of our future beauty offer, combining Sephora's specialist expertise with the strength of the M&S brand, our store estate and our growing digital platform."

Critically for suppliers, Lyttle confirmed M&S will keep investing in its own-label beauty categories "where we have established strength and customer trust" — so own-brand ranges will coexist with the Sephora-curated assortment rather than being phased out. Procurement teams should expect two parallel buying structures within M&S beauty from 2027.

Reading between the shelves

For indie and emerging brands, a 100-door national footprint attached to a major grocery-and-clothing retailer represents one of the largest new prestige distribution opportunities in the UK this decade. Brands already stocked by Sephora in the UK or Europe hold a structural advantage, since the curation will draw on Sephora's existing brand relationships. Expect a scramble for the "new-to-M&S" slots when the line-up opens.

For department stores, Boots and Space NK, the competitive math worsens: Sephora's prestige credibility now combines with M&S's weekly-shop footfall and click & collect convenience, extending discovery-led beauty retail well beyond the big city centres where Sephora's current UK estate sits.

For treatment professionals and salon operators, the move signals continued mainstreaming of specialist beauty advice in non-specialist environments — the in-store specialist teams mirror the service-led model Sephora runs elsewhere.

What happens next

Two milestones will define the story: confirmation of the participating M&S store locations and the first product line-up, both promised closer to the spring 2027 launch. Watch also for the pace of the rollout after the first tranche — the "around 100 sites over time" target leaves the build schedule deliberately open.
