- Covey launched in 2021 and closed five years later after a single $800,000 angel round (Dealroom data).
- Original three-step lineup: First of All Cleanser, Next Up Vitamin C Serum, Last But Not Least Moisturizer; later extended with Sleep Tight Bakuchiol Serum, Seal the Deal Lip Balm, Sun & Done SPF 50, Last Drop Body Lotion, priced $19–$59.
- Covey raised roughly $800,000 total, well below the multi-million rounds typically needed to crack Sephora or Ulta.
- DiDonato signed as Vichy Laboratoires global brand ambassador in January 2026 and was named Jones Road 'chief blush officer' in April 2026.
- Co-founders reviewed more than 500,000 beauty product reviews on Reddit and X before developing the range.

Covey, the minimalist skincare line launched in 2021 by model Emily DiDonato and Google executive Christina Garcia, has shut down after a single $800,000 angel round and a primarily direct-to-consumer run that never reached Sephora or Ulta Beauty.
Co-founders confirmed the closure on Monday via an Instagram post, writing they "made the difficult decision to close this chapter of Covey." The brand's website now displays only a "Coming Soon" placeholder; the full SKU catalogue has been pulled.
What products did Covey actually sell?
The range launched on a stripped-down three-step architecture:
- First of All Cleanser
- Next Up Vitamin C Serum (ascorbic-acid-style serum carrying the trend's flagship active)
- Last But Not Least Moisturizer
Garcia described the system on the 2022 "Founded Beauty" podcast as "a clean, modern version of Clinique's iconic three-step." By its later phase, Covey had extended the shelf with Sleep Tight Bakuchiol Serum (a retinol-alternative the category has broadly adopted at 0.5–1% use levels), Seal the Deal Lip Balm, Sun & Done Moisturizing SPF 50 Sunscreen, and Last Drop Body Lotion. Retailed pricing ran $19 to $59.
Why did one $800,000 round matter so much?
Start-up tracker Dealroom records Covey as having closed a single $800,000 angel round in 2021. That figure sits far below the multi-million pre-Series A raises that have typically been required to clear Sephora's "Accelerator" or Ulta's "Sparked" gates, fund standing-order inventory, and underwrite the kind of paid social spend needed to hit reorder velocity. Covey stayed DTC.
For formulators and brand operators, the case is a tidy data point on working capital: an $800K raise can build a credible three-SKU hero set, but it cannot underwrite a six-SKU expansion plus retail sell-in within the same runway.
What did DiDonato say about why the brand existed?
The premise grew out of a research pass the founders described as covering more than 500,000 beauty reviews on Reddit and X. DiDonato, who had fronted campaigns for Maybelline, Biotherm, and Giorgio Armani's Acqua di Gioia, told the "Founded Beauty" podcast:
"I'm using all these expensive products, but I was using them all at once and wondering why my skin still looked like crap, honestly. I would literally go to work and makeup artists would be like, Emily, what are you using now? Like your skin is a mess."
That frustration fed a marketing brief aimed at busy millennial mothers, the demographic both founders belong to, with the stated aim of making "skincare feel simple, effective and less overwhelming."
How did 'skinimalism' move from edge to commodity?
Covey entered the market just as pared-back routines were accelerating against the 2010s ten-step K-beauty template. Pinterest named the look-out as a top beauty trend in 2021, the same launch year. Clean beauty walked the same arc: a point of differentiation that compresses into baseline expectation within roughly four product cycles.
Where does DiDonato land now?
Outside Covey, DiDonato has kept a tight ambassador roster. Vichy Laboratoires named her global brand ambassador in January, and in April Jones Road tapped her as "chief blush officer" for the launch of its Blushing Stick. The portfolio points to a continued focus on complexion and tint rather than a return to treatment-led skincare.
What should indie founders track next?
Two near-term read-throughs: any SEC/filer signal on whether DiDonato and Garcia wind down the operating entity versus attempt a re-pivot, and whether Vichy or Jones Road convert the new ambassador slots into collaborative SKUs (a Jones Road Blushing Stick co-branded line is the more plausible vehicle). For procurement teams, the practical takeaway is unchanged: DTC-only launches with under $1M in seed capital remain high-risk in a category where Sephora and Ulta placement now drive the majority of velocity above $15 million in annual retail sales.
