Composition
- 67% of ingredients in L'Oréal formulas were sourced from nature or recycled materials as of last year, plus 800 green chemistry/eco-extraction ingredients and 120 biotech ingredients.
- SPOT, co-developed a decade ago, is integrated into new product design and measures water scarcity, biodiversity impact and carbon footprint across more than 7 billion products.
- Scaling partners include Cosmo International Fragrances (waterless extraction), Microphyt (microalgae), Plantible, Oberton, P2 Science and the BOLD fund and L'Accelerator program.
Sixty-seven percent of the ingredients in L'Oréal's formulas were sourced from nature or recycled materials as of last year, with 800 ingredients derived from green chemistry and eco-extraction and 120 biotech ingredients already in the portfolio. Erin Zoller, sustainability and green sciences lead at L'Oréal USA, delivered those figures at the 17th North American Sustainable Cosmetics Summit in New York, organized last month by Ecovia Intelligence.
The numbers carry weight because of the scale behind them. L'Oréal distributes more than 7 billion products in over 150 countries, uses more than 1,500 raw materials and grows 345 botanical species across more than 100 countries. Every formulation passes a lifecycle assessment measuring water scarcity, biodiversity impact and carbon footprint.
SPOT: A Decade of Measured Design
A decade ago, L'Oréal's sustainability, packaging and research teams co-developed the Sustainable Product Optimization Tool (SPOT), built with international experts and now integrated into the design and launch process for new products. SPOT lets the company's several thousand scientists simulate design options and evaluate their environmental and societal impact.
"Whole SPOT may provide the scientists an opportunity to show where formulas can be optimized from a footprint perspective, our formulas need the tools to have the access solutions to make those changes," said Zoller. "That's where the green sciences program comes in."
Three Pillars
The green sciences program rests on eco-extraction, green chemistry and biotechnology.
Eco-extraction uses cleaner, energy-efficient solvents. L'Oréal is working with Cosmo International Fragrances, whose patent-pending waterless, low-energy technology captures natural scent profiles without petrochemical solvents. Lancôme's Absolue Oud Bouquet, which extracts the fresh scent of garden roses, is one commercial result.
Green chemistry synthesizes high-performance molecules while eliminating hazardous substances and reducing waste, with biomimicry as a guiding principle. The flagship example is Pro-Xylane, Lancôme's patented anti-aging molecule derived from sustainable European beech and birch wood sugars. Pro-Xylane boosts the skin's synthesis of glycosaminoglycans to plump and firm skin, reduce fine lines and enhance elasticity, and features across the Absolue Skincare Collection.
Biotechnology is the third pillar, using microalgae and bacteria to ferment active ingredients in the lab and preserve agricultural land. CeraVe's Balancing Air Foam Facial Cleanser uses Glycolysine technology, a blend of a glycolipid biosurfactant with polylysine that enhances ingredient deposition on skin. L'Oréal also partners with Microphyt to unlock cosmetic potential in microalgae through a low-carbon bioproduction process, which Zoller said could fast-track natural alternatives to traditional synthetic chemicals.
The Scaling Problem
Discovery is not the bottleneck, according to Zoller. "It's not enough to discover these biotech ingredients," she said. "The biggest challenge that we're facing in the industry is to scale them from the startup flat bench to global production that L'Oréal may require."
To close that gap, L'Oréal built an ecosystem that funds innovators at every stage: its green sciences incubator, its venture fund Business Opportunities for L'Oréal Development (BOLD), and the newest engine, L'Accelerator. That program provides startups with formulation expertise, regulatory knowledge and, in Zoller's words, "industrial might" to move concepts to products at scale. L'Accelerator recently selected its first 13 participating companies.
The company also co-innovates with strategic partners and suppliers, pairing innovators with manufacturers. Current collaborations include Plantible on plant-based protein cultivation, plus green chemistry players Oberton and P2 Science.
"When you start to multiply this type of innovation across all of our brands and our full scale, we can really start to see tangible progress that we're making," said Zoller. "We really believe that the future of personal care formulations lies at the interaction of nature as well as advanced science."
Summit Context
The two-day summit ran four sessions on sustainability impacts, green ingredients, ethical sourcing and biodiversity, plus marketing. AAK served as Gold Sponsor, with Croda Beauty, Inolex, Lubrizol and Biotara as Silver Sponsors. Speakers included Ruth Calvo Rubial of L'Occitane en Provence, Chris Kilham of Medicine Hunter and Brandon Frank of Pacific Packaging Components. Panels covered raw material supply under trade uncertainty, sustainability standards, and AI's role in meeting sustainability targets.
For procurement teams and formulators tracking supplier ecosystems, the next data point to watch is the European edition of the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit, set for Paris on October 27-28, 2026, alongside L'Oréal's updated naturals sourcing percentage in its next reporting cycle.
