Kayali’s 15 October launch reached more than 300 Sephora stores in the region and Sephora China’s digital platforms, giving Mona Kattan’s fragrance brand an exclusive route into a market it regards as central to its next phase.

The rollout followed more than three years of development and a recent launch in India, extending what Kattan describes as strong international momentum. Founded by Mona Kattan in 2018, Kayali enters China with three Eau de Parfums, nine additions planned for November and an ambition to become one of Sephora China’s top three fragrance brands.

The exclusive partnership makes Sephora the initial route to market in China. Online content, store displays and fragrance education therefore operate as one connected launch system rather than separate sales channels.

What has Kayali launched in China?

The opening China assortment comprises three Eau de Parfums:

  • Vanilla | 28 Eau de Parfum
  • Yum Boujee Marshmallow | 81 Eau de Parfum
  • Eden Sparkling Lychee | 39 Eau de Parfum

Kattan called Mainland China the brand’s “natural next chapter.” She said: “China is one of the world’s most influential beauty markets, and I feel its fragrance category is entering such an exciting stage.”

She described Chinese consumers as increasingly sophisticated, discerning and curious about distinctive brands, ingredients and scent stories. For Kayali, China offers a route to introduce its Middle Eastern heritage and layering philosophy while building what it considers one of its most important long-term markets.

Kattan framed the arrival as a two-way proposition: the brand brings a clear point of view, while committing to listen and learn. The November additions should widen the proposition from three hero scents toward a wardrobe spanning gourmand, fruity, floral and musky families.

Takeaway: Kayali has opened with a deliberately small hero range, but November makes broader portfolio coverage the first commercial test.

Why is Sephora central to the launch?

Kayali and Sephora have worked together for eight years, across more than 30 countries and approximately 3,000 doors globally. Kattan said that shared knowledge of the brand, its community and fragrance discovery made the retailer the natural exclusive partner for China.

Sephora contributes Chinese market expertise and growing authority in fragrance. Its stores can turn online discovery into in-store smelling and layering, while Kayali’s top-three ambition provides a benchmark within Sephora China rather than a claim across the whole market.

The physical launch receives full backwalls and dedicated shelf space alongside Sephora’s digital ecosystem. Together, those surfaces create a path from digital content and community engagement to direct product trial, a point Kattan considers essential because fragrance ultimately has to be smelled on skin.

Kayali’s Sephoria Shanghai debut spans 23-25 October 2026. The immersive showcase invites consumers to explore the brand’s world, practise scent layering and create custom scent moods. Agnes Brissiaud, Sephora’s Global VP Merchandising Fragrance & Haircare, said: “On opening day, Mona hosted an exclusive masterclass, taking guests deeper into her fragrance inspirations, Kayali’s Middle Eastern heritage and the brand's signature layering philosophy.”

Brissiaud said the format provides significant scale and brand-building support, not a one-day event. Sephora’s Beauty Advisors add service by turning fragrance retail into a personal relationship, using guidance to move consumers beyond a transaction.

Sephora is also using the 10ml Kayali bottle and curated Sephora Favourites kits as discovery tools. Brissiaud reported immediate success for these formats in China, where they serve both trial demand and gifting.

Her wider differentiation strategy combines exclusive products from global brands, incubation of local names such as Documents and more accessible discovery sizes. Kattan has met Documents’ founder for what she described as a deeply enriching discussion.

Takeaway: Sephora supplies the scale, but its fragrance authority, discovery formats and trained advisers will determine whether Kayali can build a durable Chinese business.

What should buyers and product teams watch?

November’s nine-fragrance expansion is the next defined portfolio event. It takes the China line from three opening Eau de Parfums to 12 named fragrances if the planned additions arrive, giving buyers a broader range brief and consumers more scent-family and layering options.

The supporting experience spans Sephora stores, digital content, the Kayali Café, Scent Lab and Sephoria. Together, these touchpoints cover ingredient discovery, layering instruction and the wider brand story, addressing the need to educate shoppers before purchase.

Social platforms remain important in China, yet Kayali treats physical trial as the decisive step. The target is a highly connected, curious fragrance community.

The brand will monitor reviews, preferences and layering rituals, then use those insights to shape local assortment and communication. It must earn trust, remain locally relevant and avoid assuming that a proposition successful elsewhere will transfer automatically.

For buyers and product teams, the announcement creates immediate work around range allocation, store presentation, discovery formats and education. It discloses no reformulation, ingredient-list change or regulatory deadline; the stated execution challenge is commercial and educational.

Takeaway: The next proof point is the November arrival of nine added scents, followed by whether Sephora’s physical and digital formats reveal the consumer preferences Kayali says will shape later local decisions.
