- Haus Labs expanded Sun Dipped Bronzing Veil from six to 11 shades after pre-launch backlash
- The brand paused the July launch and returned to the lab to develop the additional shades
- Haus Labs admitted asking critic Golloria George to remove her post on embargo grounds, calling the move 'unkind'
Haus Labs will launch Sun Dipped Bronzing Veil with 11 shades instead of the original six, after pausing the product days before its planned July release when creators flagged the range as non-inclusive for darker skin tones.
The Lady Gaga-founded brand confirmed the change in a public apology statement, taking responsibility for two distinct failures: an inadequate shade range and its initial handling of the criticism. The episode is a working case study in how launch-stage formulation decisions — and community management missteps — now carry direct commercial and reputational costs for color cosmetics brands.
The backlash was led by beauty influencer Golloria George (@golloria), whose content regularly exposes gaps in shade inclusivity across the beauty industry. According to the brand's own account, the initial problem was not a lack of process. Haus Labs stated it had gone through its shade development protocol, "at some point the decision was made internally to launch with only six shades. That was the wrong decision."
The second failure compounded the first. Haus Labs acknowledged it asked Golloria to remove her post "on the technicality that she was under embargo." The brand called this "unkind and not at all how a creator or any customer's voice should ever be treated."
From pause to reformulation
Rather than shipping the six-shade range and iterating later, the brand chose to halt the launch entirely. "Thanks to her powerful voice, we decided to pause the launch and go back to the lab to ensure we had a truly inclusive shade range from day one," the statement read.
For formulation and product development teams, the message is blunt: expanding a shade range post-launch is no longer an acceptable fallback. The five additional shades — bringing the total from six to 11 — were developed before the product reached shelves. That imposes a heavier upfront workload on pigment development, stability testing and batch color-matching, but it also removes the reputational discount the market now applies to brands that launch narrow and expand under pressure.
The apology closed on a personal note: "I truly apologise to Golloria and the community for where we fell short. You were 100% right. We will work hard to make sure it never happens again. Personally, I will see to it."
Industry reaction and brand context
The response from the professional beauty community was largely positive. Viral beauty educators The Lipstick Lesbians (Alexis Androulakis and Dr Christina Basias Androulakis) commented: "So great @hauslabs ❤️"
User Anna (@annbann108) framed the episode as a lesson in brand accountability: "This is how brands take accountability for their actions!! The right response can gain respect, where the wrong one can lose it. Thank you Haus Labs. Forever a customer."
Creator Ciera Nikole (@cieranikole_) wrote: "Thank you Haus Labs and Gaga for recognising this and taking it on the chin. This is why I love the brand so much because inclusion should be the main focus for a brand always!!!"
The stumble sits awkwardly against the brand's recent track record. Earlier this year, Haus Labs was named one of the most inclusive brands in beauty. The company recently signed Emily in Paris actor Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu to front its 'We Love Concealer' campaign.
The wider portfolio
Haus Labs is not Lady Gaga's only position in beauty. The singer recently founded Outer Bio, a bioactives discovery platform, alongside her fiancé, entrepreneur Michael Polansky. The venture targets what the founders see as an innovation bottleneck in skin care research, signalling that Gaga's beauty footprint now spans both color cosmetics and upstream ingredient discovery.
What to watch
The reworked Sun Dipped Bronzing Veil — 11 shades, no firm on-shelf date beyond "soon" — is the next data point to watch. Buyers and formulators should track whether the expanded range holds up across skin tones at launch, and whether Haus Labs applies the same day-one inclusivity standard to future complexion and color launches. The brand's statement commits to internal process changes; the first new product release after this episode will show whether those changes took hold.
