Lubrizol has added synthesis, analytical and physical sciences laboratories to its Southeast Asia Innovation Centre in Jurong, Singapore, equipping the site to move beyond application testing and formulation support into earlier-stage development work for regional customers.

The expansion, delivered with support from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), layers new technical capability onto a centre that already ran application laboratories, formulation development, technical testing, immersive experience zones and dedicated technical training spaces. For formulators and procurement teams across Southeast Asia, the practical shift is proximity: work that previously required routing through laboratories outside the region can now sit closer to local manufacturing and customer briefs.

What does the expanded centre change for customers?

The Jurong site serves as Lubrizol's regional platform for customer collaboration across a portfolio that spans energy storage, coatings, electronics, packaging, life sciences and healthcare — a breadth that matters for personal care suppliers, where specialty chemistry increasingly crosses category lines and ingredient innovation borrows from adjacent industries.

Julie Edgar, Chief Technology Officer at Lubrizol, framed the investment around speed. "Customers need innovation partners who can move with speed, apply deep insights and deliver market relevance," she said.

She added: "Our extensive technical capabilities at the Southeast Asia Innovation Centre expand our ability to translate scientific expertise into commercial solutions, helping customers solve increasingly complex challenges and accelerate the path from innovation to market impact."

The language of acceleration carries concrete weight for development teams. Synthesis capability on site means candidate materials can be produced, characterised and reformulated in one location, compressing the iteration cycles that typically stretch across time zones. Analytical and physical sciences capacity strengthens the verification work that regulatory dossiers and customer audits demand.

A talent pipeline alongside the bench capacity

Alongside the laboratory expansion, Lubrizol is launching its Learning Labs programme in Singapore, a local instalment of a global STEM education initiative built on hands-on learning, mentoring and career exploration.

The global programme carries a short but substantial track record. Since launching in 2025, it has engaged more than 12,000 students through 50-plus STEM learning experiences worldwide.

Henry Liu, Vice President, Asia Pacific at Lubrizol, tied the two announcements together. "Innovation and talent are two of the most important drivers of long-term growth," he said.

"We are excited to launch the Learning Labs programme in Singapore, with the vision to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and problem-solvers," Liu added.

He positioned the combined laboratory network and education programme as "our long-term commitment to Singapore as a hub for innovation, talent development and collaboration, supporting sustainable growth across Asia Pacific."

Why Singapore, and why now

The EBD-backed expansion signals Singapore's continued role as a preferred location for specialty chemical innovation infrastructure serving the wider Asia-Pacific market. For Lubrizol, the enhanced centre consolidates a regional proposition: co-development capacity, testing facilities and training under one roof in Jurong.

For regional customers — from coatings formulators to life sciences manufacturers — the development reduces the distance between concept and commercial batch. For competitors, it raises the benchmark for on-the-ground technical support in a market where ingredient suppliers increasingly compete on service capability as much as on chemistry.

What does this change for buyers and formulators in the near term? Access to earlier-stage technical collaboration without routing projects to laboratories in North America or Europe, and a training venue that can upskill local technical staff on Lubrizol systems and methods.

The next data point to watch is customer throughput: the first co-development projects and formulation wins attributed to the expanded Jurong laboratories will show whether the investment converts into measurably faster commercialisation cycles for the region.
